The Balboa Park Pow Wow Returns for its 38th Year
Balboa Park plays host to a lot of things, but the 38th Annual Balboa Park Pow Wow is one of its most meaningful.
Organized by the San Diego American Indian Health Center, this free, two-day gathering brings together Native singers, drummers, and dancers from across the Southwest for a full weekend of tradition, performance, and community connection.

Drumming, Dancing, and Living Tradition
The Pow Wow is a genuinely moving experience – not a performance for an audience, but a living practice. Dancers arrive in traditional regalia, and the drumming and singing carry a weight that’s hard to put into words until you’ve heard it in person.
Throughout both days, you can expect Kumeyaay Bird Singing, Gourd Dancing, and Inter-Tribal Dancing, along with the Honoring of community leaders. It’s a chance to witness traditions that have been passed down through generations, and to understand how much intention and care go into keeping them alive.

Food, Art, and More
Beyond the performances, dozens of vendors set up across the grounds. Fry bread is a must – get it early, because the line tends to grow.
Native artists also bring handcrafted jewelry, clothing, blankets, and artwork, all available for purchase and all made with a level of craftsmanship you won’t find anywhere else.
Free and Family-Friendly
This one’s open to everyone, and there’s no charge to attend. It’s the kind of event where you’ll see families spreading out on the grass, kids watching the dancers with wide eyes, and people of all backgrounds sharing the same space with genuine respect and curiosity.
The Pow Wow takes place at the corner of Park Boulevard and President’s Way – easy to find, easy to spend a full afternoon at.
