Third Avenue Transforms for the Annual Starlight Parade and Tree Lighting
The Starlight Parade is back for its 61st year, and it’s the kind of tradition that draws thousands for good reason. Third Avenue transforms into parade central as floats, marching bands, dance troupes, and community groups make their way through downtown, officially kicking off the holiday season in San Diego.
Tree Lighting Sets the Stage
Get there early for the official tree lighting at 5:45 PM in the heart of Third Avenue. It’s that moment when the evening shifts from regular Saturday to full holiday mode, and live music keeps the energy going until the parade starts.
The tree lighting has become as much a part of the tradition as the parade itself, so plan accordingly if you want to catch both.

Holiday Market and Food
Before the parade kicks off, the Holiday Market on Park Way next to Memorial Park offers a chance to grab food from local vendors and do some light gift shopping.
It’s a smart move – get there early, eat something good, maybe knock out a few items on your list, and then settle in for the parade without having to leave your spot.
Bring Your Setup
This event draws serious crowds, so come prepared. Blankets and low-profile chairs are encouraged, which means the earlier you stake out your viewing spot, the better your experience will be.
The parade runs for three hours, so comfort matters. Find your spot, get cozy, and enjoy watching the floats and performances roll by.
The Starlight Parade has been a San Diego tradition since 1964, and after 61 years, it’s clear they’ve figured out how to do this right.

See you there!
Kick off the holiday season at San Diego’s longest-running parade and tree lighting celebration.
