Karl Strauss Brewing Co. Reopens its Original Downtown San Diego Location

After a major remodel, Karl Strauss Brewing Company reopens its Downtown San Diego location, bringing a fresh new look to the space that started it all in 1989.

As San Diego’s first post-prohibition craft brewery, Karl Strauss has been a cornerstone of the city’s beer scene for 35 years, and the upgrades reflect its continued commitment to craft, community, and innovation.

A New Era for a Craft Beer Icon

The 4,900-square-foot brewery at 1157 Columbia Street has been transformed while still honoring its historic roots. Some of the new features include:

  • Neon signage reading “We Launched This Party,” celebrating Karl Strauss’ role in shaping San Diego’s craft beer movement
  • An awards wall showcasing 120+ medals from national and international beer competitions
  • A refreshed bar with a sleek quartz bar top and improved tap list visibility
  • Updated lighting and industrial design that blends modern aesthetics with the brewery’s rich history
  • A private events space next to the brewing tanks, offering an immersive experience for up to 30 guests

Crafting the Future While Honoring the Past

In October 2023, Karl Strauss officially took ownership of its original Downtown location, ensuring its legacy remains intact.

“This is where we started San Diego’s craft beer movement in 1989 with the courage to build something new,” said Co-Founder Matt Rattner.

“The renovations reflect that same spirit—putting the brewhouse at the heart of the experience while ensuring this location remains a landmark for the next generation of beer lovers.”

The Downtown brewery houses a seven-barrel brewing system, serving as a research and development hub for new and experimental brews. Led by Brewmaster Paul Segura, a San Diego Beer News Vanguard Brewer Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Karl Strauss continues to push craft beer boundaries.
