Award-Winning Brewer Kyle Fjalstad Now With Original 40 Brewing

North Park’s beloved The Original 40 Brewing Company has named award-winning brewer Kyle Fjalstad as its new Head Brewer, marking an exciting new chapter for the popular brewpub.

With an impressive track record, including two medals at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival (often called “The Oscars” of craft beer), Fjalstad is set to bring a fresh wave of creativity and innovation to San Diego’s thriving beer scene.

From Barrel-Aged Excellence to Everyday Brews

Fjalstad, a San Diego State alumnus, spent five years at Modern Times, where he earned accolades for standout brews like the Silver Medal-winning “Mega Devils Teeth–Double Dutch S’mores Edition” and the Bronze Medal-winning “Chaos Grid: The Final Final Course.”

Now, he’s ready to expand beyond barrel-aged beers and craft a lineup of innovative brews that reflect the diverse tastes of North Park’s vibrant community.

“Brewing has been my passion for a long time,” Fjalstad shared. “I’m thrilled to bring a potpourri of beers to Original 40 that everyone can savor, no matter the season or time of day.”

A Legacy of Excellence

Since its opening in 2019, The Original 40 Brewing Company has built a reputation as one of San Diego’s premier brewpubs, recently earning the title of Best Brewpub 2024 from San Diego Magazine readers.

Founder Steve Billings is confident that Fjalstad’s expertise and vision will elevate the brewery even further.

“Kyle’s knowledge and work ethic are unmatched,” Billings said. “He’s the perfect addition to carry the torch and take our beer to the next level.”

Located at 3117 University Avenue, The Original 40 Brewing Company is named after the original 40-acre parcel of land that became modern-day North Park.

With the award-winning brewer Kyle Fjalstad at the helm, the brewpub will continue to offer something for everyone, from adventurous beer enthusiasts to casual sippers.
