Library Shop Mission Hills Brings Independent Bookstore Vibes to the Neighborhood

Mission Hills just got a new spot for book lovers. Library Shop Mission Hills opened its doors at the corner of West Washington and Hawk streets, bringing a curated selection of new books and book-themed gifts to the neighborhood.

It’s the second location from Library Foundation SD, following their original shop at the San Diego Central Library, which has been around since 2013.

Books are Back in the Old Library Building

The new shop lives in the former Mission Hills Library branch, which feels like a fitting full-circle moment. Inside, we’ll find new fiction and nonfiction for all ages, plus a thoughtful mix of displays that reflect the neighborhood and broader San Diego community.

There’s a section dedicated to books by local authors and titles about San Diego and Southern California culture. They’ve also carved out space for LGBTQ+ authors and stories – a nod to the shop’s proximity to Hillcrest – along with a collection of banned books, reflecting the Library Foundation SD’s stance against censorship.

More Than Just Books

Beyond the shelves, Library Shop Mission Hills stocks products from local artists and makers, giving us plenty of options for gifts that feel personal and community-driven.

The shop will also host events as part of the Library Shop SD author series, bringing celebrated authors from around the country to connect with San Diego readers.

Whether we’re hunting for a new read or a thoughtful gift, the shop doubles as a neighborhood gathering spot.

Supporting the Library System

Every purchase at Library Shop Mission Hills helps fund programs and services for the San Diego Public Library, keeping branches and resources accessible across the city. It’s a solid way to shop local while supporting something bigger.

The shop is open seven days a week, making it easy to swing by whenever the mood strikes.

See you there!

Mission Hills now has a spot where books, community, and local creativity all come together under one roof.
