The San Diego International Summer Organ Festival Returns

The San Diego International Summer Organ Festival brings nine weeks of free Monday evening concerts to the heart of Balboa Park, featuring performances on the world’s largest outdoor instrument. This is the largest organ festival in the United States, showcasing the incredible Spreckels Organ in all its glory.

What Makes This Festival Special

Artistic Director and San Diego’s Civic Organist Raúl Prieto Ramírez has curated a lineup that truly offers something for every music lover. The 90-minute concerts showcase what Prieto Ramírez calls “an explosion of styles, sounds, colors, and cultures” that you won’t find anywhere else in mainstream music.

The festival’s focus on serving the community means families can bring kids to experience what Prieto Ramírez describes as “the purest of art forms” while broadening their musical awareness and learning about new repertoires.

It’s cultural education that happens to be completely free and set in one of San Diego’s most beautiful locations.

This Year’s Highlights

The lineup includes acclaimed international organists and competition winners, with some particularly exciting special events. Soprano Alisa Jordheim, who recently performed with San Diego Opera as Despina in Così fan tutte and Gilda in Rigoletto, will be featured in one of the concerts.

The organ and orchestra celebration promises to be spectacular, featuring concertos by Poulenc, Parker, and Bach, plus a premiere by Civic Organist Prieto Ramírez himself. Conductor Alejandro Gómez Guillén leads the performance with Raúl Prieto Ramírez as soloist and Jeff Thayer as concertmaster.

The Not-So-Silent Movie Night featuring Laurel & Hardy films with organist Russ Peck offers a completely different experience, while the all-Beatles Labor Day Classic Rock Concert commemorates the 60th anniversary of the San Diego Beatles concert.

It’s exactly the kind of creative programming that makes the organ feel relevant and exciting rather than stuffy or old-fashioned.

The Setting and the Instrument

The Spreckels Organ Pavilion provides a stunning backdrop for these performances. The open-air venue in Balboa Park creates a one-of-a-kind experience where world-class musical artists perform, and everyone can attend for free.

This accessibility stems from the 1915 Deed of Gift when brothers John and Adolph Spreckels gave the organ and pavilion to the City of San Diego with the stipulation that concerts remain free to the public. It’s a legacy gift that keeps giving over a century later.

Year-Round Programming

Beyond the summer festival, the Spreckels Organ Pavilion hosts weekly concerts every Sunday at 2 PM throughout the year, also free thanks to the City of San Diego’s support. The summer festival represents the pinnacle of their programming, but the music continues year-round for anyone who discovers they love the experience.

The San Diego International Summer Organ Festival showcases how this world’s largest outdoor instrument continues to create magical musical experiences that bring our community together in the heart of Balboa Park.
