GRAMMY Winners Costanzo And Salvant Debut At The Conrad’s SummerFest
Acclaimed countertenor, Anthony Roth Costanzo, and jazz sensation, Cécile McLorin Salvant, will make their debuts at La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest as part of its Synergy Initiative, the company announced.
Wednesday, August 17 | Cécile McLorin Salvant
On Wednesday, August 17, 2022, multi-GRAMMY®-winner Cécile McLorin Salvant’s Synergy Under the Influence concert will feature works from her new album, Ghost Song, which The New York Times called her “most revealing and rewarding album yet.”
Salvant has a captivating passion for storytelling and weaves together jazz, blues, Baroque, and folk traditions from the world over.
She has received GRAMMY® Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album three times, and a nomination for a fourth. In 2020, she received the MacArthur fellowship and the Doris Duke Artist Award.
For this concert, she will be joined by the members of her quintet, Sullivan Fortner (piano), Marvin Sewell (guitar), Yasushi Nakamura (bass), and Keita Ogawa (percussion).
Thursday, August 18 | An Evening of Kurt Weill
Then, on Thursday, August 18, Salvant joins internationally-acclaimed countertenor, Anthony Roth Costanzo, in An Evening of Kurt Weill: Seven Deadly Spins, featuring and inspired by the music of Kurt Weill. The program will explore Weill songs alongside an eclectic group of composers ranging from Purcell, Poulenc, and Schubert to Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, and Kate Bush.
Costanzo became an international sensation and won a GRAMMY® for his portrayal of the pharaoh, Akhnaten, in the Philip Glass opera of the same name at the Metropolitan Opera. He is a recipient of the 2020 Beverly Sills Award from the Metropolitan Opera, a winner of the 2020 Opera News Award, and Musical America’s 2019 Vocalist of the Year, among many others.
An Evening of Kurt Weill is a newly-conceived program directed by Zack Winokur, featuring members of The Knights with the SummerFest Chamber Ensemble and Sullivan Fortner on piano, conducted by The Knights’ Eric Jacobsen.
The La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest “Under the Influence”
Both concerts take place in the acoustically magnificent Baker-Baum Concert Hall at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla, California, as part of SummerFest, La Jolla Music Society’s annual festival featuring the finest chamber musicians from around the world, as well as jazz and dance.
This year, Music Director Inon Barnatan has expanded SummerFest to four weeks on the theme of “Under the Influence,” exploring the muses, places, and movements that inspired the world’s greatest composers to create some of their finest work.
Both Cécile McLorin Salvant’s concert and An Evening of Kurt Weill are presented as part of La Jolla Music Society’s Synergy Initiative, co-produced by Inon Barnatan and Clara Wu Tsai.
These collaborators share a curiosity and passion for compelling creators from across the entire cultural spectrum, and conceived the Synergy Initiative to see what happens when these great artistic forces meet one another—creating a space that allows these creators to push the envelope, and creating unique experiences that challenge our preconceptions.
