The San Diego Museum Of Art Announces Merger With The Museum Of Photographic Arts

The San Diego Museum of Art and The Museum of Photographic Arts (MOPA) announced upcoming merger to become one unified institution.

This strategic merger will allow the combination of collections, resources, and expertise for the benefit of the San Diego community and beyond, allowing visitors to experience the world of visual art through multiple lenses.

The San Diego Museum Of Art Merger with MOPA

The San Diego Museum of Art and The Museum of Photographic Arts merger will officially take effect on July 1, 2023. At that time, The San Diego Museum of Art will house a new department called the Museum of Photographic Arts at the San Diego Museum of Art, focused solely on photographic arts.

MOPA’s existing collection will join SDMA’s collection, providing visitors with a more comprehensive view of the art form. Deborah Klochko, Lawrence S. Freedman Executive Director and Chief Curator at The Museum of Photographic Arts, will take the role of Curatorial Advisor and implement MOPA’s current exhibition schedule, and assist with the transition period through December 2023.

The newly combined institution will continue to offer a range of programming that includes exhibitions, educational initiatives, and community outreach programs.

Updates on the project will be available here in the coming months.

Enhanced Membership Experience

Members will soon be able to take advantage of membership at both museums! Membership reciprocity will begin July 1. SDMA members will receive benefits like unlimited admission to MOPA, free or discounted admission to MOPA film screenings, a discount at the MOPA Shop, and more. Further details will be shared in the Museum’s twice-monthly e-newsletter Member Monday in June.

See you there, San Diego!
