The crème de la crème of global photography is coming to town, and it’s bringing a powerful message with it. The Prix Pictet Human exhibition is making its only U.S. stop right here in America’s Finest City at the San Diego Museum of Art, and it’s a visual feast you won’t want to miss.

Lights, Camera, Action for Sustainability

The San Diego Museum of Art is rolling out the red carpet for the Prix Pictet Human exhibition, showcasing the work of 12 phenomenal photographers who are using their lenses to shine a spotlight on global sustainability. This isn’t just pretty pictures—it’s art with a purpose.

From September 27 through December 15, 2024, MOPA@SDMA in Balboa Park will be transformed into a globe-trotting adventure. You’ll see everything from hard-hitting documentaries to dreamy landscapes, all exploring what it means to be human in today’s world.

A World Tour in Your Backyard

Roxana Velásquez, the big cheese at The San Diego Museum of Art, is pumped about this exhibition. “We’re thrilled to be the only U.S. venue on this tour,” she says. “These photos aren’t just eye candy—they’re conversation starters about some seriously important issues.”

And who are these visual storytellers? Brace yourselves for an international lineup that’ll knock your socks off:

  • Hoda Afshar (Iran)
  • Gera Artemova (Ukraine)
  • Ragnar Axelsson (Iceland)
  • Alessandro Cinque (Italy/Peru)
  • Siân Davey (UK)
  • Federico Ríos Escobar (Colombia)
  • Gauri Gill (India)
  • Michał Łuczak (Poland)
  • Yael Martínez (Mexico)
  • Richard Renaldi (US)
  • Vanessa Winship (UK/Bulgaria)
  • Edgar Martins (Portugal)

These talented folks are tackling everything from Indigenous rights to economic collapse, from childhood to migration. It’s like a crash course in global issues but way more fun and visually stunning.

Spotlight on the Winners

Speaking of stunning, let’s talk about the winners. Gauri Gill from India snagged the top prize of 100,000 Swiss francs for her community-focused work in India.

And in a plot twist, Federico Ríos Escobar from Colombia won the first-ever People’s Choice Award for his heartbreaking series on migrant children.

See you there!

So, whether you’re a photography buff, a sustainability superhero, or just someone who appreciates a good visual story, this exhibition is your ticket to a world tour without leaving San Diego.

The Prix Pictet Human exhibition kicks off on September 27 and runs through December 15, 2024, at MOPA@SDMA in Balboa Park.
