Oceanside Museum of Art Tackles Tough Topic With Powerful New Exhibit

The Oceanside Museum of Art is set to unveil “My Intimate Partner,” a multi-media exhibition that dives deep into the murky waters of intimate partner violence (IPV).

My Intimate Partner exhibition

Brushstrokes of Awareness

Curator Smadar Samson has assembled a roster of 12 talented artists to explore the tangled web of intimacy, power, and control that often underlies IPV.

There will be dance films by The Rosin Box Dance Studio, stop-motion animation by Hugo Crosthwaite, and a mix of 2D and 3D works that promise to challenge what we think we know about this sensitive topic.

More Than Just a Women’s Issue

“My Intimate Partner” aims to broaden our understanding of IPV, moving beyond the stereotype of it being solely a women’s problem. Instead, it places the issue within a larger social context, inviting all of us to examine our own relationships with power and control.

A Creative Call to Action

This isn’t just about observing—it’s about engaging. The exhibition serves as a rallying cry to end IPV, using the power of creativity to spark conversations and, hopefully, change.

As curator Samson puts it, “The artists selected for the exhibition unveil layers of insight that could be best attained through the power of the creative experience.” In other words, sometimes art can say what words alone can’t.

This isn’t just a local affair, either. The exhibition is part of the Official Calendar of World Design Captial San Diego Tijuana 2024, putting our region’s creative problem-solving skills on the global stage.

See you there!

“My Intimate Partner” runs from October 5, 2024, to March 16, 2025, at the Oceanside Museum of Art. Its opening coincides with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, adding extra weight to its important message.

Let’s support this bold initiative and keep the conversation going.
