Local Fishermen Cast a Wider Net of Support for San Diego Families

San Diego’s local fishing community, through the San Diego Fishermen’s Working Group, is making waves with an amazing new partnership with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank.

This collaboration is bringing the freshest seafood straight from our waters to families who need it most through February 2025.

San Diego Fishermen's Working Group

From Ocean to Table

Our fantastic local fishermen are diving right in, bringing about 1,400 pounds of fresh fish to the table every month. We’re not just talking about any old fish here—think succulent tuna, magnificent swordfish, and heavenly halibut, all swimming their way through the Food Bank’s incredible network of nonprofit partners and feeding programs.

A Sea of Benefits

This partnership is creating waves of positive change throughout our community. While our local fishing crews get steady business, San Diegans in need get access to top-notch protein.

As Pete Halmay, president of the San Diego Fishermen’s Working Group wisely points out, keeping it local means shorter supply chains and a smaller carbon footprint.

The initiative couldn’t come at a better time, with Casey Castillo, CEO of the Food Bank, sharing that one in four San Diegans are currently navigating nutrition insecurity.

Making Waves of Change

This collaboration is riding the wave of a larger movement, backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Local Food Promotion Program and championed by the San Diego Regional Policy & Innovation Center.

The goal? Building a stronger fishing industry while making sure more San Diegans can enjoy fresh, sustainable seafood.
