Friends of Downtown’s Golf Tournament Champions Local Students

Friends of Downtown San Diego is teeing up their 5th Annual FOD Scholarship Fundraising Golf Tournament, and this year’s event promises to deliver both competitive fun and meaningful community impact.

When a tournament combines 18 holes at Riverwalk Golf Course with direct support for San Diego City College students, it’s the kind of fundraising event that feels genuinely worthwhile.

FOD Scholarship Fundraising Golf Tournament

More Than Just a Round of Golf

This isn’t your typical corporate golf outing. The tournament package includes an 18-hole scramble, golf cart, buffet dinner, and opportunities to compete for some serious prizes—including a foursome at PGA West and complimentary entry into next year’s tournament for defending champions.

The scramble format keeps things accessible for golfers of varying skill levels while maintaining that competitive edge that makes tournaments engaging.

What really sets this apart is the direct connection between your participation and local student success.

As Erika Migliore, President of Friends of Downtown San Diego, puts it: “Every dollar raised helps a local student access higher education. Not only are we helping individual students reach their goals, we are investing in their futures and building a stronger downtown community.”

Impact That Actually Matters

The numbers behind this organization are genuinely impressive. Since 2000, Friends of Downtown San Diego has awarded over $800,000 in scholarship funds, making them the largest contributor of single scholarships to San Diego City College.

Because the organization is completely volunteer-run, 100% of scholarship donations go directly to students—covering everything from university application fees and books to transportation, food, and rent.

That level of direct impact is rare in fundraising events. When you register for this tournament, you’re not just supporting some abstract cause—you’re directly funding specific needs that can make or break a student’s ability to continue their education.

Fifth Year Strong

The fact that this tournament is entering its fifth year speaks to both the ongoing need and the community support it’s generated. The consistent participation and growth suggest this has become one of those annual events that golfers and supporters genuinely look forward to, rather than just another obligation on the calendar.

The location at Riverwalk Golf Course provides a solid setting that’s accessible to downtown supporters while offering the kind of course experience that makes the day feel special rather than routine.

Golf Tournament

Supporting Without Swinging

For those who want to contribute but aren’t golfers, Friends of Downtown San Diego accepts direct donations through their website. This inclusive approach recognizes that community support comes in many forms, and the cause itself—supporting local students—resonates beyond just the golf community.

See you there!
