A Century in the Saddle: The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe Debuts Horseback Trail Riding Experience

The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe just launched a horseback trail riding experience that connects us to the property’s deep equestrian roots, and the timing couldn’t be better.

In the heart of Rancho Santa Fe – one of California’s most storied and private equestrian communities – this new offering gives you a chance to explore the landscapes that have drawn visitors to this hidden Southern California enclave for over a century.

Rancho Santa Fe’s Equestrian Heritage

The equestrian soul of Rancho Santa Fe traces back to the 1830s at the nearby Osuna Ranch, the adobe home of San Diego’s first alcalde (mayor) and the heart of a sprawling 8,000-acre land grant.

In 1924, visionary female architect Lilian Rice preserved this spirit by creating a master plan for Rancho Santa Fe that ensured it remained a ranch sanctuary with nearly 60 miles of private trails.

The area became a hideaway for Hollywood legends like Bing Crosby. Originally named La Morada, The Inn served as a guest house for potential homebuyers who arrived on horseback to scout the region’s backcountry.

Guided Rides Through Rolling Hills and Eucalyptus-Lined Trails

Guests of The Inn can explore the rolling hills and scenic eucalyptus-lined trails of Rancho Santa Fe on guided rides available in 60-minute and 90-minute options.

The experience is designed to offer a new perspective on the landscapes, letting you see the property and surrounding area the way early visitors did – on horseback, moving through terrain that still feels remarkably private and preserved.

Pricing and Access

The 60-minute ride starts at $250 per rider, and the 90-minute option is $300 per rider. It’s not an everyday activity for most people, but if you’re looking for something that genuinely connects you to the history and character of Rancho Santa Fe, this is one of the more authentic ways to do it.

See you there!

Sometimes the best way to understand a place is to experience it the way people did a hundred years ago, and The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe is making that possible again.
