Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World is Coming to MOPA@SDMA – and San Diego is the Only West Coast Stop

San Diego is the only West Coast stop for one of the most compelling photography exhibitions of the year. Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World opens at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art, and it’s a genuinely rare opportunity – the first exhibition ever dedicated solely to Beaton’s fashion and portrait photography, organized by The National Portrait Gallery in London and landing in Balboa Park as part of SDMA’s centennial year.

A Career That Spanned Decades and Continents

Cecil Beaton was one of those rare creative forces who seemed to do everything – photographer, fashion illustrator, Oscar-winning costume designer, social caricaturist, writer.

The exhibition traces his career across more than 100 works, moving through ten sections that cover everything from his early work with London’s artistically inclined socialites of the 1920s to fashion photography for Vogue, documentary work during World War II, and the iconic costume and set designs for My Fair Lady on stage and screen.

The Faces He Photographed

The portraits alone make this worth the trip. Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Margaret, Francis Bacon, Truman Capote, Salvador Dalí – Beaton had an extraordinary ability to capture the personality and charisma of whoever sat in front of his lens, whether it was a Hollywood icon or a future queen.

Good to Know

SDMA members get complimentary admission. General admission tickets are required for nonmembers. A full-color catalogue from The National Portrait Gallery is also available in the MOPA@SDMA Store for anyone who wants to take a piece of it home.

See you there!

Over 100 photographs, six decades of glamour, and the only West Coast showing – Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World is exactly the kind of exhibition that makes Balboa Park worth the trip.
