Take a Seat for Cowboy Junkies at Del Mar Fairgrounds

Cowboy Junkies have never needed volume to hold a room. The Toronto four-piece built a career on hushed vocals, slow-burning guitar, and the kind of quiet that makes an audience lean forward.

Belly Up is bringing their Celebrating 40 Years and Beyond tour to Del Mar, and this one is seated from start to finish.

Cowboy Junkies 40th Anniversary

Same Four Musicians Since 1985

Margo Timmins on vocals, her brother Michael on guitar and songwriting, her brother Peter on drums, and Alan Anton on bass. That lineup has not changed once since the band formed in Toronto in 1985, which is close to unheard of across 16 studio albums and five live records.

Multi-instrumentalist Jeff Bird has played on every album but the first, and guest musicians have filled out the studio records over the years. The core four have stayed exactly where they started.

One Microphone in a Toronto Church

The 1986 debut, Whites Off Earth Now!!, was cut in the Timmins family garage with producer Peter Moore and a single ambisonic microphone. Two years later the band took that same setup into Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity and made The Trinity Session.

The blues, country, folk, rock, and jazz running through that record earned them a following that has stuck around ever since. The Los Angeles Times called it one of the ten best albums of 1988.

Your GPS Should Say Jimmy Durante Boulevard

Belly Up is presenting this show, but it is not happening in Solana Beach. The Sound sits inside the Del Mar Fairgrounds on Jimmy Durante Boulevard, and that is where you want to point the car.

Seating runs $55 for reserved, $70 for premium reserved, and $85 for gold circle. If you would rather skip the online service charges, The Sound box office sells tickets without fees on show days. It is an all ages room, so bring whoever played you this band first.

See you there!

Monday nights do not usually come with four decades of harmony attached. Get there early, settle into your seat, and let the room go quiet.
