La Jolla Playhouse Premieres A Heartfelt New Play About Fathers, Daughters, and Growing Up
La Jolla Playhouse invites you to step into the summer of 2008 with Indian Princesses, a fresh and funny coming-of-age story that unpacks the tangled threads of father-daughter relationships, identity, and what it means to truly be seen.

A Summer Like No Other
When five young girls of color and their white fathers sign up for a father-daughter bonding program at a local community center, things don’t exactly go as planned. Some are eager, others skeptical—but all are about to embark on a journey that’s awkward, eye-opening, and unexpectedly tender.
Inspired by playwright Eliana Theologides Rodriguez’s own childhood experiences, Indian Princesses draws from the real-life YMCA program of the same name. The result is a laugh-out-loud, emotionally honest story that navigates the messiness of family, the sting of feeling misunderstood, and the healing power of connection.
A New Voice Worth Watching
Rodriguez is an exhilarating new playwright whose work centers young women and explores the intersections of race, heritage, and growing up. Her writing strikes a rare balance—equal parts hilarity and heartbreak—that captures the bittersweet beauty of adolescence in all its complexity.
See you there!
Whether you come for the humor, the heart, or the healing, La Jolla Playhouse’s Indian Princesses will leave you moved—and maybe even a little more seen.
