What Does “Craft Tequila” Actually Mean? San Diego is About to Find Out

San Diego gets a front-row seat to one of the more interesting conversations happening in the spirits world right now – and yes, there’s tequila involved.

The Tahona Tour Comes to Solare Lounge

The Tahona Tour is a limited-ticket, multi-city event bringing together some of the most respected names in the tequila category – Volcan de mi Tierra, Fortaleza, Alto Canto, Trujillo, and Agave Matchmaker – for an afternoon of guided tasting, honest conversation, and a deep look at what “craft” actually means in the world of agave spirits.

San Diego is the first stop, and it’s happening at Solare Lounge on Point Loma’s Roosevelt Road – a solid backdrop for this kind of gathering.

More Than Just a Tasting

The afternoon opens with a presentation from Grover Sanschagrin, founder of Agave Matchmaker, who has spent years building a platform around tequila education and transparency. He’s not just here to pour, he’s here to talk about how tequila is actually made, why that matters, and where the category is headed.

From there, the event moves into a guided tasting across the participating brands, followed by a panel discussion with the brand owners themselves.

The conversation centers on a few things that are getting a lot of attention right now: additives, production methods, and what it genuinely takes to earn the “craft” label in an industry that doesn’t always make those distinctions easy to see.

Why This One is Worth Showing Up For

If you’re the kind of person who already has opinions about blanco versus reposado, or who has started looking up NOM numbers on bottles, this is the room for you. And if tequila is something you enjoy without knowing all that much about how it’s made, this is a pretty great introduction.

Volcan de mi Tierra alone carries more than 250 years of family history behind it, with roots going back to 1774. The other names at the table – Fortaleza, Alto Canto, and Trujillo – bring their own depth. Sitting in a room with the people behind these bottles, asking actual questions, is a different experience than reading a label.

Tickets are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, so locking in a spot sooner rather than later makes sense.

See you there!

This is the kind of afternoon that changes how you think about what’s in your glass – and makes Sunday feel like it was very well spent.
