La Jolla Music Society Locks in Inon Barnatan Through 2030
La Jolla Music Society just announced they’re keeping Inon Barnatan as SummerFest Music Director for another five years, and honestly? Best news we’ve heard all week.
Barnatan has been absolutely transforming SummerFest since he took over in 2019, and this extension means we get to keep enjoying his incredible programming through 2030.
Why This Matters for San Diego’s Music Scene
Barnatan isn’t just any pianist—we’re talking about someone who’s played with the New York Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony at the Proms, and pretty much every major orchestra you can think of.
But what makes him special at SummerFest is how he curates these programs that bring together world-class musicians, jazz artists, and dancers in ways that feel fresh and exciting.
This past summer was apparently the most successful SummerFest in LJMS history—20 concerts over four weeks plus more than 50 free learning events. That’s the kind of programming that makes La Jolla’s classical music scene something truly special.
The 40th Anniversary Celebration Ahead
The timing couldn’t be better since SummerFest’s 40th anniversary is coming up in 2026. Having Barnatan locked in means we know that milestone celebration is going to be something extraordinary.
His ability to “draw the highest level of talent from all corners of the globe” according to critics means that anniversary festival is probably going to be absolutely incredible.
Beyond Just Performance
What we love about Barnatan’s approach is how involved he gets with the whole SummerFest experience.
He’s not just showing up to play piano—he’s overseeing the fellowship program that brings emerging artists to La Jolla, participating in coaching workshops, and doing those Artist Lounge conversations that make classical music feel accessible instead of intimidating.
Critics have been raving about his performances too. This summer’s “Quartet for the End of Time” performance was called “transcendent,” which is exactly the kind of musical experience that makes us grateful to live somewhere with this caliber of programming.
A True Musical Partnership
Barnatan himself said every SummerFest feels like “both a homecoming and a new beginning,” which perfectly captures why this partnership works so well.
It’s not just about having a famous pianist—it’s about having someone who genuinely connects with La Jolla’s music community and keeps pushing the festival to explore new musical territories.
Here’s to five more years!
With Barnatan secured through 2030, La Jolla Music Society’s future is looking absolutely brilliant.
