La Jolla Playhouse Serves Up a Double Dose of Drama: From Tiki Bars to Tinsel Town

Who’s up for some world-class theater right in our backyard? La Jolla Playhouse is rolling out two shows that promise to be the talk of the town. We’ve got the scoop on these must-see productions that’ll have you laughing, crying, and everything in between.

“Primary Trust”: A Small-Town Tale With Big Heart

First up, we’re diving into the West Coast premiere of “Primary Trust” by Eboni Booth. This gem took New York by storm last year, and now it’s our turn to see what all the fuss is about.

La Jolla Playhouse presents Primary Trust

Meet Kenneth, a 36-year-old bookworm working at a small-town store who spends his nights sipping mai tais with his buddy Bert at the local tiki bar. Sounds like a pretty sweet gig, right? But when life throws him a curveball, and he loses his job, Kenneth’s world gets flipped upside down.

Don’t worry, though—this isn’t your run-of-the-mill sob story. “Primary Trust” is all about new beginnings, unexpected friendships, and finding the guts to see the world with fresh eyes.

It’s the kind of play that’ll leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside, with a renewed faith in the power of good old-fashioned storytelling.

Want to catch this award-winning show? Mark your calendars for September 24 through October 20, 2024, at the Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre.

Showtimes vary, so hop over to the La Jolla Playhouse website here for all the details and to purchase tickets.

Your Local Theater Presents: A Holiday Romp for Grown-Ups

Now, if you’re in the mood for something a little more… unconventional, we’ve got just the ticket. “Your Local Theater Presents: A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, Again” is not your grandma’s holiday play.

This hilarious and heartfelt comedy by Anna Ouyang Moench is a love letter to all the dreamers out there, wrapped up in tinsel and served with a side of existential crisis.

La Jolla Playhouse Your Local Theater Presents

Meet Eddie, a bright-eyed Juilliard grad ready to conquer the theater world. His first stop? A regional production of “A Christmas Carol.” Fast forward through the years, and Eddie finds himself back at the same theater, same play, different roles.

It’s a wild ride through the ups and downs of an actor’s life that’ll have you laughing one minute and pondering life’s big questions the next.

This fresh take on a holiday classic runs from November 19 to December 15, 2024, at the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. Just remember, this one’s for the grown-ups—leave the kiddos at home for this not-so-silent night at the theater.
