Iron Orr Fitness: The San Diego Training Philosophy Built Around Not Getting Injured

An injury during Olympic training changed the direction of Justin Orr’s career. It also gave him the idea that would eventually become Iron Orr Fitness.

In 2002, Orr was training for the U.S. Bobsled team when he got hurt. Rather than treating the injury as just a setback, he built a training philosophy around what he wished had been emphasized more clearly from the start: making progress without getting hurt.

Iron Orr Fitness Justin Orr

That idea became Iron Orr Fitness, which opened in 2004 and has since grown to three San Diego locations.

At the center of the company is a rule Orr calls DGI: Don’t Get Injured.

What Iron Orr Fitness Is Known For

Iron Orr Fitness approaches personal training with long-term consistency in mind rather than chasing the fastest possible transformation.

The focus includes:

  • Corrective exercise designed to improve movement and address problem areas
  • Myofascial release as part of the training process
  • Periodized programming that progresses over time rather than pushing at full intensity every session
  • Individualized training for goals including fat loss, muscle gain, body recomposition, and improved movement
  • Nutrition guidance designed to fit into everyday life rather than requiring clients to put their social lives on hold

For Orr, the goal is not simply to get someone through a hard workout. It is to create a program they can continue following.

“My training philosophy is rooted in corrective exercise and myofascial release,” Orr has said. “DGI, don’t get injured, is what has helped me continue to achieve client results without injuries.”

That philosophy comes directly from experience. Orr knows what it is like for an injury to interrupt high-level training, which is why staying healthy enough to keep progressing sits at the center of his coaching approach.

Progress That Clients Can Keep Building On

The DGI philosophy also shapes the way Iron Orr Fitness approaches motivation.

Rather than treating results as one big finish line, the team emphasizes the smaller improvements that happen along the way.

“My team and I keep our clients motivated by always recognizing their small wins,” Orr said. “Results are the focus, but you have to make the journey fun and enjoyable.”

That can mean improvements in strength, consistency, movement, body composition, or simply feeling more comfortable training than someone did when they started.

The approach is practical for another reason: life outside the gym still matters.

San Diego has no shortage of restaurants, breweries, patios, celebrations, and busy schedules. Iron Orr Fitness builds training and nutrition around the reality that clients are still going to have dinners out, weekends with friends, work commitments, and days when the perfect routine is not possible.

Instead of asking clients to structure their entire lives around the gym, the goal is to build habits that can continue alongside the rest of life.

The Same Standards Used With Professional Athletes

Iron Orr Fitness also works with professional athletes.

In October 2025, the company renewed its partnership as the official strength and conditioning partner of the San Diego Seals, San Diego’s National Lacrosse League franchise.

The renewal marked the seventh consecutive partnership between Iron Orr Fitness and the Seals. The two organizations have worked together since the team’s inaugural season, with Iron Orr serving as part of the Seals’ physical development program.

“Iron Orr Fitness has been a core partner of the San Diego Seals since our inaugural season,” said Adam Boettger, the Seals’ VP of Sales. “Their unwavering commitment is instrumental in our efforts to bring a championship to San Diego.”

For Orr, the partnership reflects the same emphasis on consistency and preparation that carries into the company’s everyday training sessions.

“The Seals organization stands as a world-class organization because of their outstanding ownership group, front office, coaching staff and their exceptional athletes who play on the floor,” Orr said. “The franchise demonstrates exceptional dedication to excellence and community service which makes it an honor to work with them.”

Professional athletes and everyday clients obviously arrive with different goals, but the underlying standard remains similar: train intelligently, make steady progress, and stay healthy enough to keep going.

Three Iron Orr Fitness Locations in San Diego

Iron Orr Fitness currently trains clients at three San Diego locations:

Costa Verde
8720 Costa Verde Blvd
San Diego, CA

Jewel at Lux
4200 Brooke Court
San Diego, CA

3Roots
7918 Collective Way
San Diego, CA

All three locations are open Monday through Friday from 5 AM to 10 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM.

The extended weekday schedule gives clients room to train before work, during the day, or later in the evening.

A Training Rule Born From Experience

Iron Orr Fitness grew from a lesson Orr learned at a high level of athletic competition: progress does not mean much if an injury keeps forcing you to start over.

More than two decades after opening the first Iron Orr Fitness location, that lesson still shapes the way the company trains its clients.

The goal is not simply to push harder.

It is to train in a way that allows someone to come back, keep improving, and build on what they accomplished the last time.

For Orr, that is what DGI ultimately means.
