RETNA Explores Love and Healing in Intimate New Solo Exhibition

RETNA is presenting his most personal body of work to date at Madison Gallery with “LOVE LETTER | CARTA DE AMOR,” a solo exhibition that marks a significant shift from his previous focus on reclaiming space and asserting identity.

The globally recognized contemporary artist, known for his iconic hieroglyphic script and large-scale public works, turns inward to explore themes of love, loss, and healing through new large-scale canvases, mixed-media works, and site-specific installations.

Personal Transformation Drives Artistic Evolution

The exhibition emerges from RETNA’s journey through sobriety and self-examination, representing what he describes as a move from “reclaiming space” to “opening space” for vulnerability, gratitude, and connection.

This shift reflects his personal transformation and his desire to create work rooted in love—for self, community, and a world in need of healing.

RETNA’s distinctive visual language, which blends graffiti traditions with illuminated manuscripts and global iconography, continues to draw from his African American, Salvadorian, and Cherokee heritage.

His hieroglyphic script connects to the culturally rooted mark-making tradition established by pioneering street artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Universal Themes Through Personal Experience

The artist positions this work as both deeply personal and universal, addressing connection at a time when it matters more than ever. The bilingual title reflects RETNA’s multicultural background while expanding the work’s accessibility across different communities and languages.

His previous collaborations with major brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel, along with exhibitions across Los Angeles, New York, and London, demonstrate his established position in contemporary art.
