San Diego Opera’s Opera Uncorked Makes Opera Actually Approachable

San Diego Opera is bringing back Opera Uncorked, their casual series that breaks down what you’re about to see without making you feel like you need a music degree to understand it.

Resident Conductor Bruce Stasyna kicks things off with Pagliacci, covering the opera’s history, what to listen for, and the behind-the-scenes challenges of actually producing opera. Plus wine and cheese when you arrive, because nothing says “accessible culture” like snacks.

How This Works

The format is straightforward—show up at 6 PM for wine and cheese, presentation starts at 6:30 PM. Stasyna walks through everything you’d want to know before seeing Pagliacci, from historical context to musical highlights to production quirks.

It’s designed to make you feel prepared rather than lost when you actually attend the opera.

Single tickets are $18, or you can buy all four of this season’s Opera Uncorked events for $60, which breaks down to $15 each. The series includes Pagliacci, Vocal Varietals and Vintages (hosted by David Bennett), The Barber of Seville, and Carmen.

The Master Classes Add Another Layer

If you want to go deeper, the Master Classes provide behind-the-scenes looks at operatic training and performance. Soprano Hailey Clark, who plays Nedda in Pagliacci, leads the first one. Later sessions feature Maestro Yves Abel (San Diego Opera’s Principal Conductor) and Bruce Stasyna.

These happen at the Sills Salon inside the Civic Theatre, doors at 2:45 PM, starting at 3 PM. Tickets are $20 each or all three for $54. Seating is extremely limited, so waiting until the last minute isn’t a great strategy.

Why These Programs Matter

Opera can feel intimidating if you don’t know what you’re walking into. These preparatory sessions remove that barrier by giving context and background before you’re sitting in a theater trying to follow along. The wine and cheese reception and casual presentation format keep it social rather than academic.

The Master Classes show the actual coaching process that brings opera roles to life, which is interesting even if you’re not planning to become an opera singer yourself. Watching professionals work through musical and interpretive choices reveals layers you might miss just seeing the final performance.

See you there!

At $18 for Opera Uncorked or $20 for Master Classes, these are affordable ways to enhance your opera experience. The package deals make even more sense if you’re planning to attend multiple operas this season—you’re essentially getting educational programming that improves your understanding of what you paid to see.
