‘Ventana Huichola’ Opens at OMA With a Colorful Tribute to Culture and Community
If you’re looking for a thoughtful, visually stunning cultural experience this spring, Ventana Huichola at Oceanside Museum of Art should be on your list. This immersive exhibition brings ancient Huichol traditions to life through color, craft, and community.

A Living Installation Rooted in Heritage
At the heart of the exhibition is a large-scale installation of Tsikuris—brightly woven “God’s Eyes” that hold deep spiritual significance in Huichol culture. Traditionally crafted to mark important life events, each one tells a story through layers of vibrant yarn, symbolizing time, protection, and connection to the divine.
What makes this exhibition especially unique? Many of the pieces were created by local participants of all ages during February workshops hosted at OMA, making Ventana Huichola not only a celebration of heritage, but a living example of community in action.
A Cross-Border Cultural Conversation
Curated by Natalie Gonzalez, the exhibition reflects the binational spirit of our region, linking Southern California’s contemporary art scene with ancient Mexican traditions.
The Tsikuris—historically placed in spaces where people worked or traveled—take on new meaning here, inviting us to reflect, connect, and carry a piece of that tradition forward.

Originally debuting at the Borrego Art Institute’s Contemporary Latin American Art Show, this expanded version at OMA offers a deeper look into the lasting strength of cultural identity—and how it evolves when rooted in community.
