San Diego’s Lost Cause Meadery Wins Big At 2020 Mazer Cup International

Have you ever had mead? If not, it’s time to give it a try! San Diego’s own Lost Cause Meadery was awarded with five medals at this year’s Mazer Cup International Competition, the world’s largest mead competition.

The medal haul brings the total to 10 Mazer Cup medals over the last two years, making Lost Cause the most awarded meadery in the world for 2019 and 2020.

All these medals to boot

This year, Lost Cause was awarded two gold, two silver and a bronze medal for the following meads: Comeuppance, Raspberry Envie, Heavy Meadow, Buck It All and Chasing Alice (the latter being a collaboration with local cider maker, Raging Cider).

Founded by Billy and Suzanna Beltz in late 2017, Lost Cause Meadery has experienced rapid growth since its opening and is coming off the heels of a year filled with national and international recognition. In March 2019, Lost Cause tied for the most medals overall at the Mazer Cup, and later won two gold medals and third best overall at the second largest competition in the country, hosted by the National Honey Board. The awards have helped bring recognition and appreciation for the meadery among the local craft community in San Diego.

“It’s quite an honor to  receive this kind of recognition from our peers and mentors in the industry,” said Billy Beltz, co-founder of Lost Cause Meadery. “ While we still have a lot to learn, I think this means our small but mighty operation is on the right track.”

A second tasting room

Earlier this year Lost Cause Meadery opened its second tasting room and production facility location in the Bay Park neighborhood of San Diego. The new 3,200-square-foot space is located next to Deft Brewing and the two craft businesses are able to take advantage of a new California ABC law that allows breweries and wineries (Lost Cause is licensed as a winery) to share tasting room space.

The new space includes a shared beer garden patio that allows patrons to enjoy beer and mead in the same outdoor space. The patio is also home for Cucina Caprese, a local catering company that makes wood-fired pizzas in their Italian brick oven.

When building out the new space, Lost Cause focused on creating a modern yet eclectic tasting room featuring art and murals from various local artists, several indoor/outdoor spaces and a private room for guided tasting events for groups of up to 12 people.

The new Lost Cause Meadery space is located at 5328 Banks Street Ste. B, San Diego, CA 92110.

Congrats on the big win and expansion, Lost Cause!

See you there, and stay healthy, San Diego!
