Sixty Artists on What This Region Looks Like Now

The show pulls contemporary artists from across Southern California and Baja, treating the border less as a line and more as a shared subject. Work came in through a regional open call, so this is not a tidy roster of usual suspects.

Names on the wall include Irene Abraham, Wick Alexander, Deena Altman, Melisa Arreola, Omar Campos, Jennifer Anne Bennett, Kevin Inman, Olivia Prior, Sequoia Redbird, Anna Stump, and Duke Windsor, with dozens more alongside them.

Nine Artists Return, More Than a Decade Later

Back in 2013, OMA and the San Diego History Center teamed up on Nature Improved: San Diego Artists Interpret Our Landscape. Nine of those artists are in this one too.

That overlap is the quiet hook here. You get to see how the same eyes read a coastline, a canyon, or a construction site 13 years on.

A Sculptor, a Curator, and a Cross-Border Point of View

The curatorial advisory committee brought together Kumeyaay sculptor and public artist Johnny Bear Contreras, OMA’s Katie Dolgov, visual artist and cultural agent Gabriel Boils Terán, and SDHC’s Tina Zarpour.

“The appreciation of landscape is a commonly shared human experience,” Boils Terán says. “However, its specific characteristics vary for each person and are determined by where they live, their personal history, and the culture collectively shared in a particular place.”

Balboa Park Holds the Other Half

A concurrent presentation runs at the San Diego History Center in Balboa Park into early 2027, so you can catch the north county half and the downtown half on separate weekends.

Pair the Balboa Park visit with the rest of El Prado and you have a full afternoon without moving your car.
