The ocean just got a whole lot closer to home, and the Adam R. Scripps Living Seas Gallery is proof that some transformations are worth the wait. After months of anticipation and construction dust, Birch Aquarium has officially opened the doors to this stunning new experience, and we’re already planning our next visit.
What Makes This Different
This isn’t just a refresh of the beloved Hall of Fishes we all remember. The $18.7 million transformation represents the largest capital project in Birch Aquarium’s history, and honestly, it shows.
The new Living Seas Gallery takes us on an immersive journey through the Pacific Ocean that feels more like stepping into an underwater world than observing it from the outside.
The centerpiece that has us most excited? A massive Tropical Coral habitat that’s four times larger than what was there before. We’re talking about a living, breathing ecosystem that captures your attention the moment you walk in.
Add to that the Tropical Mangrove roots that seem to grow right out of the gallery walls, and you’ve got an experience that blurs the line between aquarium and ocean floor.

Every great aquarium needs its headliners, and Living Seas delivers. The Giant Pacific Octopus gets its own dedicated space where we can peek into their mysterious world.
