Which Restaurants and Bars Have the Best Outdoor Patios in San Diego? The Votes are in…

We asked our Instagram fam to tell us your favorite patios for outdoor dining, drinks, and relaxing in the fresh San Diego air. Here’s what you said.

These Five Got the Most Votes!

We had a five-way tie for the most-loved patios in San Diego… congrats to all of these amazing venues!

Kairoa Brewing

This New Zealand-inspired brewpub brings serious island vibes to Park Boulevard, and honestly, we’re obsessed with their upstairs outdoor space.

The rooftop features fire pits, lounge seating, dining tables, and some of the best sunset views in the neighborhood. It’s the perfect spot to settle in with friends while enjoying the sunset over San Diego’s urban scenery, especially with one of their 24 house and guest beers featuring uniquely aromatic New Zealand hops.

The space is dog-friendly too, so bring your four-legged friend along for the experience.

The 10,000+ square foot space was designed with families and groups in mind, making it ideal whether you’re on a casual date or celebrating something special. Pro tip: aim for sunset hour—it’s absolutely unbeatable.

Gravity Heights

Gravity Heights has mastered the art of the “epic beer garden” with two locations that both feature expansive outdoor seating.

The Sorrento Valley flagship offers a covered garden dining area, an uncovered outdoor patio with various seating areas, a covered outdoor bar, and an astroturfed area with games and lawn chairs.

Both locations feature outdoor fire pits where you can belly up for events or just casual drinks. The Mission Valley spot has brightly colored picnic tables and a communal outdoor fire pit table that’s perfect for happy hour.

The outdoor seating includes live music, and most areas have good protection from wind with heaters for those cooler nights.

Led by legendary local brewmaster Skip Virgilio, they’re constantly crafting new brews to complement the scene. Stop by after work, sit by the fire pit, and enjoy their daily 3 PM to 6 PM happy hour.

Rustic Root

If you want San Diego views, head upstairs to the Gaslamp’s only rooftop restaurant. Rustic Root offers 5,500 square feet of stylish indoor-outdoor space. It’s hands down one of the most Instagram-worthy spots in downtown.

Animal hedges, beautiful street lamps, and not-your-mama’s patio furniture create a warm atmosphere. The seating around the fire pits offers the best viewing of the restaurant.

With heaters and comfy seating, the space is super welcoming, and you can see the city lights during sunset. They also have live music, which adds to the ambiance.

Note that the rooftop space isn’t dog-friendly, but guests with dogs are welcome on the street-side downstairs patio.

Be sure to make a reservation, especially for rooftop dining and weekends. They also offer happy hour Monday through Friday from 5 PM to 6:30 PM.

And now, Rustic Root has expanded to Solana Beach. Just steps from the Cedros Avenue Design District, the new location brings the same bold flavors and creative cocktails to North County, with a fresh coastal spin. Expect a vibrant, open-air patio, weekend brunch, and the same energetic vibe—plus way easier beach parking.

Stone Gardens – Escondido

Experience craft beer, eclectic cuisine, and a lush one-acre garden at what might be San Diego County’s most magical outdoor dining destination.

The various seating areas are scattered about what can only be described as a small forest. The trees are tall and thick enough that the whole place feels entirely isolated, like a world of its own.

The well-landscaped patio features rock features, koi ponds, and even a waterfall. Fairy lights make it look beautiful, especially at night. The restaurant features huge windows that open to the patio and a one-acre beer garden, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

Grab a beer and take it for a stroll around the gorgeous garden before plopping down on a lounge chair.

With 36 craft and specialty beers on tap and delicious preparations with locally grown, organic produce, it’s beer heaven meets farm-to-table dining.

Kilowatt OB

Kilowatt has a very different vibe than Ocean Beach’s other tasting rooms. It seems to be much more of a party/club/beach-y sort of place.

This former tire shop turned trippy tasting room is wonderfully weird with a psychedelic theme, bright colors, black lights, a backlit bar, music posters, lava lamps, and funky jam band music playing.

Roll-up doors open the space to a 500-square-foot patio, blending the trippy interior with OB’s chill outdoor scene.

With 20+ beers on tap ranging from multiple IPAs and traditional styles to barrel-aged, fruit, and sour beers, this spot delivers exactly what you’d expect from OB—eccentric, fun, and unapologetically unique.

The tasting room is both kid- and dog-friendly, staying true to the neighborhood’s inclusive spirit.

Their outdoor courtyard is dog-friendly and ideal for sipping margaritas under the string lights.

Whether you’re there for a low-key afternoon or a date night with a view, Ketch always hits the spot.

The menu still features their famous Liege-style waffles, but now you can also dig into savory plates like the Steak & Eggs with zhoug and crispy hash browns, or the California Breakfast loaded with bacon, avocado, and goat cheese. For something sweet, the Strawberry Fields waffle with guava rose jam is a must-try.
