Art Party Celebrates Eduardo Chillida’s Basque Sculptures at SDMA
The San Diego Museum of Art is throwing an Art Party that goes way beyond your typical gallery opening. This multi-sensory evening celebrates the opening of Eduardo Chillida: Convergence with Basque-inspired food, drinks, live music, and interactive activities that honor both the renowned sculptor and his native Spanish region.
Who Eduardo Chillida Is and Why This Matters
Eduardo Chillida is regarded as one of the foremost sculptors of the twentieth century, known for his profound connection to landscape and sensitive use of materials from his native Basque Country—iron, steel, and oak.
His sculptures merge elements of nature like earth, sea, wind, light, and space with cultural aspects including music, poetry, philosophy, and architecture.
The exhibition showcases this unique approach, and the Art Party extends that philosophy into a full evening experience. You’ll get opening night preview access to the exhibition, plus insights from Museum docents who’ll be available for art dialogue throughout the evening.
The Experience Beyond the Art
The indoor/outdoor format takes advantage of the Museum’s spaces, with festivities in the rotunda and gallery spaces, as well as an open-air activity terrace.
During the event, you can access the Comb of the Wind immersive virtual reality experience in the featured exhibition, though capacity constraints mean not everyone will get to try it.
The food and drink program brings the Basque Country to Balboa Park with exceptional wines and sangria from J.Lohr Vineyards & Wines, Basque-style ciders from Raging Cider & Mead Co., and themed signature cocktails.
The catering lineup includes A+M Catering, California’s Best Catering & Events, Chef Joann & Co., De La Vina Catering, Harvest Kitchen, Muse Cheesecakes & Bakery, Paella Lifestyle, Panama 66, and Wolf in the Woods.
Live Entertainment and Activities
Tah Rei and Aaron Irwin will deliver global fusion grooves featuring music from Basque Country, blending vinyl and live instruments for a soundtrack that connects to the exhibition’s cultural themes.
Stefanie Bales Fine Art will create live painted takeaways themed on Eduardo Chillida’s Gravitación series, so you can watch art being made while experiencing art that’s already been created.
Hands-on art making inspired by the featured exhibition means you’re not just observing culture, you’re participating in it. Combined with games and additional live music, the whole evening feels like a celebration rather than a formal museum event.

Why This Format Works
The Art Party approach recognizes that art exists within culture, not separate from it. By incorporating Basque food, drinks, music, and interactive elements, the evening helps us understand Chillida’s work within its cultural context rather than just as isolated objects in a gallery.
The dress code suggests “festive themed attire,” which encourages people to engage with the Spanish/Basque theme and makes the whole evening feel more participatory and celebratory.
