Barona’s Powwow Celebrates Native American Culture
The Barona Band of Mission Indians is hosting their 53rd Annual Barona Powwow this Labor Day Weekend, bringing together hundreds of Native American dancers from across the country for a powerful celebration of culture and community.
This three-day event showcases both traditional and contemporary dance styles while offering us an authentic experience of Native American traditions, all with free admission and parking.

Three Days of Cultural Celebration
The powwow begins with gourd dancing, followed by the grand entry of dancers in full regalia—a breathtaking opening ceremony that sets the tone for the entire weekend. The celebration extends across multiple days, providing ample time to experience the full range of activities and performances.
You can witness traditional dance competitions, including the Fancy Shawl Dance and Grass Dance, each with its own distinctive style and cultural significance. The variety of dance styles represents different tribes and regions, creating an educational opportunity to understand the diversity within Native American cultures.
Music, Food, and Artisan Crafts
Hand Drum contests, singing, and drumming provide the soundtrack for this cultural celebration, with performances that connect to centuries-old traditions. The musical elements are integral to powwow culture, creating the rhythmic foundation that guides the dancers and energizes the entire gathering.
Food plays a central role, with favorites like Indian fry bread tacos offering us a taste of traditional Native American cuisine. The combination of authentic food with the cultural performances creates an immersive experience that engages all the senses.

Supporting Native Artists
Local and traveling vendors showcase a wide selection of arts, crafts, and handmade jewelry, providing opportunities to support Native American artisans while taking home authentic pieces.
These vendor booths offer everything from traditional beadwork to contemporary Native art, representing the ongoing evolution of Indigenous artistic traditions.
The Barona Sports Complex on the Barona Indian Reservation provides the perfect setting for this significant cultural event, located just one mile north of Barona Resort & Casino on Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside.
