Celebrate Buddy Guy’s 90th Birthday at The Rady Shell
Buddy Guy walked into Chicago in 1957 and spent the next seven decades rewiring what an electric guitar could sound like.
He brings his 90th birthday celebration to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, with Christone “Kingfish” Ingram along as special guest. One night, on the water, with one of the last living architects of the electric blues.
From a Louisiana Sharecropper’s Farm to Chess Records
Guy was born in 1936 to a sharecropper’s family in rural Louisiana. By 1957 he was in Chicago, helping build the city’s explosive West Side sound from the ground up.
His work with Chess Records and his own recordings changed what an electric guitar could do in a room. Nearly every rock and blues player who came after has been borrowing from him since.
Nine Grammys, 38 Blues Music Awards, and a Kennedy Center Honor
The trophy case is absurd. Nine Grammy wins plus a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, 38 Blues Music Awards, the Billboard Century Award, the Presidential National Medal of Arts, and a Kennedy Center Honor.
He is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and Rolling Stone ranks him No. 23 on its “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” His 2019 Grammy for The Blues Is Alive and Well proves he is still adding to the pile.
Kingfish Ingram Shares the Bill
Christone “Kingfish” Ingram joins Guy as special guest for the evening. Two names on one blues bill, and a single night in San Diego to catch them together.
See you there!
Ninety years in, Buddy Guy is still plugging in. Grab a seat by the water, let the bay breeze do its thing, and watch a legend work.
