Heroes Helping Heroes: San Diego Unites to Fight Hunger

San Diego’s got heart, and we’re proving it once again with the second annual Uniting to Combat Hunger Food Drive. This year, we’re not just filling bellies—we’re honoring those who’ve filled our ranks.

Uniting to Combat Hunger Food Drive

A Salute to Service Through Support

From now until Veterans Day (November 11), we’re rallying the troops to support Feeding San Diego and local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts. The Uniting to Combat Hunger Food Drive is a win-win that’ll make you feel twice as good about giving back.

How You Can Join the Fight

  • Drop off non-perishables at participating VFW posts across the county
  • Donate to the virtual food drive if you’re more of a digital warrior
  • Every pound of food or dollar donated earns the VFW post an extra buck (up to $1,500 per post)
Feeding San Diego

The Mission: Feeding Our Heroes

Here’s a reality check—nearly a quarter of active-duty service members faced food insecurity in 2020. For our veterans, one in nine working-age heroes is struggling to keep their pantries stocked. We’re talking about the folks who’ve got our backs, now it’s time we’ve got theirs.

Why Our Heroes Need Help

  • Low pay for junior enlisted members
  • Job challenges for military spouses
  • Surprise expenses like moving costs and medical bills
  • Sky-high living costs in some duty stations
  • Tricky qualification rules for food assistance programs

Bob Kamensky, Feeding San Diego’s CEO and a veteran himself, puts it best: “It’s shocking to think that those who serve or have served our country may be experiencing food insecurity.”
