Hotel del Coronado Named to TIME’s 2026 World’s Greatest Places List

Hotel del Coronado has earned a major global nod, landing on TIME’s 2026 list of the World’s Greatest Places. The annual list highlights 100 extraordinary destinations around the world that are redefining travel through innovation, authenticity, and excellence – and this year, The Del was recognized as one of the standout “Places to Stay.”

For San Diego, it’s another proud moment for one of our most iconic coastal landmarks.

Hotel Del Coronado

A $550 Million Restoration Seven Years in the Making

The recognition follows the completion of The Del’s monumental $550+ million restoration, a seven-year effort that carefully preserved the hotel’s 138-year legacy while ushering in a new era of contemporary luxury.

Originally built in 1888, Hotel del Coronado has long been one of California’s most recognizable destinations. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, it shares that distinction with American icons like The White House and the Statue of Liberty, and is one of only 23 historic hotels in the country to hold the title.

This marks the first time in the hotel’s history that it has undergone such a comprehensive renovation. The focus went beyond refreshes and upgrades, centering instead on thoughtful restoration and long-term preservation to ensure the landmark endures for generations to come.

Honoring the Past While Embracing the Present

In its coverage, TIME noted that The Del’s transformation prioritized preservation over trend-driven additions. Highlights include the revitalization of the Victorian Neighborhood, the restoration of the original Victorian building and garden courtyard, refreshed guestrooms, and updates to the legendary Crown Room.

New additions have also been thoughtfully integrated into the property, adding contemporary energy while respecting its historic character. These include:

  • Nobu Del Coronado, bringing globally recognized Japanese cuisine to the coast
  • Serẽa, the resort’s sea-to-table fine dining restaurant
  • Shore House, featuring 75 one- to three-bedroom residential-style accommodations
  • Beach Village, a gated cottage collection offering a more private, elevated stay

Together, these updates expand the experience while preserving the architectural soul that has defined The Del for more than a century.

A New Chapter for a San Diego Icon

For more than a century, The Del has welcomed travelers from around the world to Coronado’s shoreline. This latest recognition from TIME reflects both its storied past and its renewed vision for the future.

As General Manager Marco Tabet shared, the restoration was about ensuring the magic of The Del’s history is not only preserved, but elevated for the next generation of travelers.

For locals, it’s a reminder that one of the world’s greatest places is right here in our own backyard.
