Katsuya Ko Brings a Fresh Take on Japanese Dining to La Jolla’s Westfield UTC

Sam Nazarian’s sbe Entertainment Group just opened Katsuya Ko at Westfield UTC, and it’s a different vibe than what you might expect if you’re familiar with the original Katsuya. The name “Ko” means “child” in Japanese, and that’s exactly the approach here: youthful, warm, and built for sharing.

Chef Katsuya Uechi and Nazarian designed this spot with the next generation in mind, leaning into a more approachable take on modern Pan-Asian cuisine.

Katsuya Ko la jolla

Classics Plus New Exclusives

The menu balances signature Katsuya dishes with new items you’ll only find at Ko. You’ll still see favorites like Original Crispy Rice, Baked Crab Hand Rolls, and Yellowtail Jalapeño, but the Ko exclusives are where things get interesting.

Chicken and Kimchi Gyoza with Black Garlic Ponzu, a rich Wagyu Sando with Crispy Wagyu Katsu and Black Garlic Tonkatsu Sauce, and Katsuya Fried Chicken (yes, they’re calling it KFC) with Furikake Ranch all lean into that shareable, social dining style.

The open robata takes center stage with specialties like Beef Tenderloin Kushiyaki and Sweet Potato with Miso Butter and Yuzu Yogurt.

A Beverage Program That Pairs

The drink menu follows Japanese culinary philosophy, focusing on sake, soju, beer, and wine with compositions designed for balance and clarity. The cocktail program skips traditional spirits and instead goes for reinterpretations that pair seamlessly with the food.

It’s thoughtful without being fussy, which fits the overall energy of the place.

Bright, Bold, and Built Around the Robata

The space itself blends bold Japanese design with playful touches like floral and denim textiles, amber glass bricks, and geometric lighting. The open robata and sushi bar anchor everything, giving you a clear view of the precision and energy that goes into each dish.

At 3,000 square feet, Katsuya Ko fits about 112 guests, with 80 seats inside and 32 on the al fresco patio. It’s lively without feeling chaotic, and works just as well for a casual lunch as it does for a celebration.

The First West Coast Ko

This is the first Katsuya Ko to open on the West Coast, and sbe has hinted that more locations are in the works. For now, La Jolla gets the first shot at this next evolution of the Katsuya experience, and reservations are open.

See you there!

Katsuya Ko proves that even iconic restaurants can evolve without losing what made them special in the first place.
