October Means Kids Are Free at the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park
Both the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are making October way more affordable for families by offering free admission for kids 11 and younger throughout the entire month.
One adult with valid admission can bring up to six kids free, which is a legitimately generous deal if you’re managing a group of cousins or planning a birthday outing.

How This Actually Works
No separate ticket required for the kids—they just need to be with an adult who has paid admission. This applies to both the San Diego Zoo’s 100 acres in Balboa Park and the Safari Park up in Escondido.
The timing coincides with fall break for many schools and gives families flexibility to visit whenever works for their schedule rather than cramming into one specific weekend.
The six-kid maximum per adult is unusually generous compared to most “kids free” promotions that cap at two or three. This actually makes it viable for families with multiple kids or groups doing joint outings.

Why October Makes Sense
Weather in San Diego during October is pretty much perfect for zoo visits—not too hot, crowds have thinned out after summer, and you’re not competing with as many tourists. The 100-acre zoo becomes way more manageable when you’re not navigating it in 85-degree heat with cranky kids.
Both venues have their October programming running simultaneously—HalGLOween at the Zoo on weekends and Autumn Festival at the Safari Park on Saturdays and Sundays. So the free kids admission stacks with special events if you time your visit right.
The Value Proposition
Kids tickets normally run around $70 at the Zoo and similar at the Safari Park, so the savings add up fast with multiple children. Even accounting for the adult admission cost, this promotion makes visits significantly more affordable for families who might otherwise skip it due to budget constraints.
The promotion also works for annual passholders who can bring kids without additional cost, which extends value beyond just the initial membership investment.

See you there!
Weekdays will be less crowded than weekends, especially if you can go mid-morning after the initial rush. The Safari Park requires more driving but tends to have fewer visitors than the main zoo.
If you’re trying to do both locations in October, spread them out rather than attempting back-to-back days with exhausted kids.
