Scripps Oceanography Lecture Series Returns This Fall

The Jeffrey B. Graham Perspectives on Ocean Science Lecture Series is returning to Birch Aquarium this fall with a focus on eco-optimism and practical solutions for marine conservation challenges.

For over two decades, this series has connected the public with cutting-edge research from Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists, translating complex oceanographic studies into accessible presentations that highlight real-world applications and societal benefits.

Marine Prosperity Areas: A Conservation Evolution

The series opens with Scripps Oceanography Professor and Marine Ecologist Octavio Aburto presenting “Marine Prosperity Areas: A New Hope in Conservation.”

This lecture addresses a fundamental challenge in marine conservation—the traditional Marine Protected Areas model that requires immediate sacrifices for long-term benefits decades in the future, often creating resistance from local communities dependent on marine resources.

Aburto’s research with a multinational team of marine scientists and economists has developed a comprehensive framework that integrates ecosystem conservation, economic growth, environmental responsibility, and social policy.

This holistic approach represents a significant shift from conservation models that view environmental protection and economic development as opposing forces.

Research with Real-World Impact

The series emphasizes how Scripps research contributes to society through economically-grounded strategies for sustaining critical ecosystems and fisheries, plus innovative work connecting oceanography and human health.

This practical focus demonstrates how academic marine science translates into solutions for global challenges rather than remaining confined to research institutions.

The eco-optimism theme reflects a deliberate shift toward solution-oriented science communication, presenting research that offers hope and actionable pathways rather than just documenting environmental problems.

Educational Accessibility and Community Engagement

The lecture format makes advanced oceanographic research accessible to general audiences while maintaining scientific rigor. Free admission for Birch Aquarium members and $12 general admission pricing ensure broad community access, though advance reservations are required due to limited seating.

The evening timing accommodates working professionals and families, while the one-hour format provides sufficient depth without overwhelming non-specialist audiences. The series continues Scripps’ commitment to public science education and community engagement beyond traditional academic channels.

See you there!

This fall, the Ocean Science Lecture Series at Birch Aquarium demonstrates how world-class marine research can address pressing conservation challenges while remaining accessible to curious community members.
