Roadtrip Idea: Monterey County Wine Country

We’re raising our glasses to Monterey County Wine Country, one of California’s most incredible regions that’s been crushing it lately (pun totally intended). While September Wine Month may be in our rearview mirror, their 65 tasting rooms and 82 wineries are keeping the party going all year long.

A Wine Lover’s Paradise

Let’s talk numbers that’ll make any wine enthusiast weak in the knees: 46,000 acres of premium vineyards, 53 different grape varieties, and a wine scene that’s been thriving for over 250 years.

But what really makes Monterey’s wines pop? It’s all thanks to their secret weapon—the “Blue Grand Canyon.” This deep, cold slice of Monterey Bay creates some seriously unique microclimates that give these wines their knockout personality.

And if you’re thinking Monterey’s just another wine region, think again. They’re literally the country’s biggest Chardonnay producer and California’s crown jewel for Pinot Noir.

Sip, Savor, and Sleep Among the Vines

Carmel-by-the-Sea’s Wine Walk is perfect for those who love to chart their own course. Or let the pros handle the details with Carmel Wine and Wandering or Monterey Guided Wine Tours—they’ll even hook you up with exclusive barrel tastings.

For the ultimate wine country escape, check into spots like Bernardus Lodge or Carmel Valley Ranch. Want something extra special? Holman Ranch offers a private estate experience complete with a restored stone hacienda, exclusive wines, and even horse stables.

The Real Stars of the Show

Monterey’s wine scene is as diverse as its ten AVAs, and we’re loving the stories behind the bottles. There’s Miguel Lepe, Monterey’s first Mexican-American winemaker, crafting organic masterpieces at Lepe Cellars.

Or Francis Joyce, who casually decided to combine being a race-car driver, dentist, and winemaker (because why not?). His son Russell’s now leading Joyce Winery into its next chapter.

Don’t miss Galante Family Winery, celebrating 30 years of pouring excellence in 2024, or the groundbreaking work of Marta Kraftzeck, Monterey’s first female winemaker, who’s helping Scheid Vineyards earn serious environmental creds.

And if you’re wondering about food pairings, Aubergine just snagged its second Michelin star, adding to Monterey’s impressive collection of 16 Michelin-recognized spots.

See you there!

Whether you’re a serious wine buff or just in it for the gorgeous views and good vibes, this vibrant wine scene is waiting to be explored.
