La Valencia’s Whaling Bar To Honor Iconic Charm With Modern Sophistication

San Diego’s legendary Pink Lady, the La Valencia Hotel, announced that renovations are officially underway for the much-anticipated return of the iconic Whaling Bar, set to reopen its doors in early 2024.

The Whaling Bar, a beloved nautical-themed cocktail lounge, first graced the La Jolla scene in 1949, hosting star-studded gatherings and luminaries such as Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), acclaimed novelist Raymond Chandler, and the revered founder of the La Jolla Playhouse’s summer theater, Gregory Peck.

Closed for a decade since 2013, this historic establishment’s legacy has persevered, and its revival is cause for celebration.

The Whaling Bar: The Next Chapter

With a deep respect for its storied past, the next chapter of The Whaling Bar at La Valencia will seamlessly blend old-world charm with contemporary sophistication.

Working in partnership with Schoos Design, the design has been meticulously crafted by the La Valencia and SDCM teams, and incorporates many original elements of the space, including the cherished original 1940s-era Wing Howard paintings that once adorned its walls. These timeless artworks will serve as a testament to the enduring connection between the old and new generations of patrons.

The Whaling Bar

Stepping into The Whaling Bar, you’ll be enveloped by soft, curvy ceilings and walls adorned in soothing, inviting colors. Brass accents throughout the bar transport guests to a bygone era, evoking a sense of vintage glamour and nostalgia. Cantilevered tables, stately wood columns, and sleek marble slab countertops elevate the bar and dining experience, offering a sophisticated and upscale atmosphere for guests to enjoy.

Recessed booths, soft, intimate lighting, and scattered casual seating create a familiar gathering spot reminiscent of the original Whaling Bar. It’s a space where stories are shared, laughter fills the air, and memories are made – just as they were decades ago.

A new era of timeless elegance

“We are thrilled to introduce a reimagined Whaling Bar to the La Jolla community while honoring its illustrious past,” said Summer Shoemaker, General Manager of La Valencia Hotel.

“This reopening symbolizes our commitment to preserving the legacy of La Valencia and creating new, unforgettable experiences for our guests. We look forward to sharing the magic that made the original Whaling Bar iconic while ushering in a new era of timeless elegance and legendary hospitality that defines La Valencia.”

San Diego’s acclaimed SDCM Restaurant Group has been carefully chosen as the operating partner to breathe new life into The Whaling Bar. SDCM will oversee day-to-day operations, working closely with the La Valencia team who will continue to operate all other food and beverage venues within the hotel.

SDCM’s award-winning team, including Beverage Director Eric Johnson and Executive Chef Brian Redzikowski, will curate a cocktail menu and bar offerings that promise to delight and echo classic Whaling Bar favorites.
