7 Whiskey Bars in San Diego Every Whiskey Lover Must Try

“Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” – Mark Twain

“Ninety percent I’ll spend on good times, women, and Irish Whiskey. The other ten percent I’ll probably waste.” – Tug McGraw

“Whisky is liquid sunshine.” – George Bernard Shaw

”I wish to live to 150 years old, but the day I die, I wish it to be with a cigarette in one hand and a glass of whiskey in the other.” – Ava Gardner

We love whiskey! And thank goodness, San Diego has plenty of it, from bars with whiskey in the name, to over a dozen distilleries of our own, the whiskey is ready when you are!

No matter how you take it, here are a few of the best places in San Diego to get your whiskey on.

Seven Grand

If you’re looking for a spot that feels like Don Draper’s favorite after-work haunt, Seven Grand in North Park should be at the top of your list. Walking in, you’d think you stepped onto a Mad Men set with dark plywood paneling and stuffed animal heads – it’s hunting lodge meets sophisticated speakeasy.

Whether you’re a wheated bourbon fan or an American single malt kind of whiskey drinker, Seven Grand provides an extensive selection from Tennessee, rye, and Irish blended to various single blended bourbons, Speyside, and Japanese whiskies to satisfy any palate.

The bartenders here know their stuff and aren’t just pouring drinks – they’re curating experiences.

Beyond the impressive whiskey selection, you’ll find pool tables and live music in the back room. For serious enthusiasts, their Whiskey Society hosts visiting distillers every Wednesday and Friday at 8 PM with rare tastings.

The Bottom Line: Seven Grand brings LA whiskey bar sophistication to North Park without the pretension.

📆 Open Daily | 4 PM – 2 AM
📍 3054 University Ave, San Diego

barleymash

When you want the energy of a sports bar but with an actual respect for whiskey, Barleymash in the Gaslamp delivers on both fronts. This isn’t your typical dive – it’s a sprawling, upscale sports bar where the owner clearly understood that you can love both bourbon and touchdowns without compromising on either.

The setup is brilliant: a massive marble-topped island bar dominates the center with multiple TVs, but head to the back bar and you’ll find the real treasure – a whiskey carousel that rotates rare bottles like some kind of carnival ride for spirits nerds.

Their house Old Fashioned, the “Ron Burgundy,” features their current private-barrel bottling (recently Woodford Reserve, but they’ve also had Elijah Craig and Michter’s). With about 200 whiskey choices ranging from $12 Jack Daniel’s to $295 Pappy Van Winkle 23-year, there’s something for every budget and palate.

The food here isn’t an afterthought either – their “progressive bar fare” actually lives up to the hype, with everything from buffalo wings that locals swear by to weekend brunch that’ll make you forget about game time.

The Bottom Line: Barleymash proves you don’t have to choose between watching the game and drinking good whiskey.

📆 Open Mon – Fri, 12 PM – 2 AM | Sat, 10 AM – 2 AM | Sun, 9:30 AM – 2AM
📍 600 Fifth Ave #6916, San Diego

The Whiskey House

When someone tells you they have the world’s largest whiskey selection, you usually roll your eyes. But The Whiskey House in the Gaslamp actually backs up the claim – they hold the Guinness World Record with over 4,000 bottles lining the walls.

This isn’t just impressive numbers for bragging rights; it’s a legitimate whiskey destination that draws serious enthusiasts from around the globe.

The space captures that perfect whiskey bar vibe with exposed brick, Edison bulbs, and leather seating. What separates it from other “whiskey temples” is the staff actually knows their stuff – they’re guiding you through tastings and helping you discover bottles you’d never find elsewhere.

The happy hour is genuinely outstanding (4 PM to 7 PM daily) with $1 wings, $6 whiskey sours, and a $10 burger worth ordering at full price.

The Bottom Line: The Whiskey House lives up to its world record status – this is where serious whiskey lovers come to play.

📆 Open Mon – Tue, 4 PM – 11 PM | Thu, 4 PM – 12 PM | Fri – Sat, 9 AM – 1:30 PM | Sun, 9 AM – 11 PM
📍 420 Third Ave, San Diego

Aero Club

Don’t let the dive bar exterior fool you – Aero Club in Mission Hills is San Diego’s original whiskey bar and one of the most respected whiskey destinations on the West Coast.

Opened in 1947 by a local female pilot, this narrow, unassuming spot houses over 1,000 whiskeys in a space that’s maybe 15 feet wide and twice that long.

The whiskey menu is nearly an inch thick (seriously), ranging from accessible pours to bottles that draw collectors from across the country.

The vibe is pure dive bar – killer jukebox, pool table, pinball machines, and free popcorn – but with zero pretension despite housing one of America’s most impressive whiskey collections. Their signature cocktail, “Be Good or Be Gone,” proves you can dress up Jameson without betraying its spirit.

The Bottom Line: Aero Club is proof that the best whiskey bars don’t need fancy interiors – just exceptional selections and people who know how to pour them.

📆 Open Mon – Thu, 2 PM – 2 AM | Fri – Sun, 12 PM – 2 AM
📍 3365 India St, San Diego

The Lion’s Share

Step into The Lion’s Share and you’ll feel like you’ve stumbled into a Victorian fever dream – taxidermy peacocks, surreal paintings of aristocratic foxes, and dark wood furniture lit by chandeliers create an atmosphere that’s part hunting lodge, part Alice in Wonderland.

It’s theatrical without being gimmicky, and the drinks match the setting’s ambition.

This Marina District institution (celebrating 14 years in 2025) takes its cocktail program seriously.

Bar director John Gibian crafts inventive drinks like the “Dark Therapy” – a Boulevardier variation featuring Japanese whiskey and black garlic tincture – and classics done right. Their whiskey program spans bourbon, Scotch, and everything in between, with cocktails that show real technique and creativity.

The food leans heavily into exotic game meats (bison tartare, antelope sliders, duck confit), but even non-adventurous eaters will find excellent burgers and refined gastropub fare.

What sets this place apart is the complete commitment to creating an experience – from the meticulously selected glassware to the knowledgeable staff who can guide you through both the menu and the extensive spirit selection.

The Bottom Line: The Lion’s Share delivers on atmosphere and substance – a place where the theatrical setting is matched by genuinely impressive cocktails and culinary creativity.

Polite Provisions

Polite Provisions has become a San Diego cocktail institution despite – or perhaps because of – its rebellious spirit.

After facing multiple liquor license suspensions for pushing boundaries with innovative techniques like batching, house-made syrups, and draft cocktails, this North Park favorite recently reopened in February 2025 with a refreshed look and renewed commitment to both creativity and compliance.

The space feels like stepping into a vintage pharmacy – brass and glass fixtures, cushioned bench seating, and that unmistakable apothecary vibe that makes you want to order something medicinal.

What sets Polite Provisions apart is their approach to whiskey cocktails. Their “Strictly Business” riffs on the Gold Rush with rye whiskey, oloroso sherry, and house-made herbed bitters, while their new “cinnamon soda with whiskey” has already earned rave reviews.

The bar’s accolades speak volumes: James Beard Foundation Semi-Finalist for Outstanding Bar Program, Tales of the Cocktail Best American High Volume Cocktail Bar, and Imbibe Magazine’s Cocktail Bar of the Year.

Their 2025 menu features everything from stirred classics to large-format sharing drinks, with cocktails on tap that remain uniquely theirs.

The Bottom Line: Polite Provisions proves that innovation doesn’t require abandoning tradition – their whiskey program respects classics while fearlessly pushing into new territory.

📆 Open Mon – Thu, 5 PM – 2 AM | Fri – Sun, 3 PM – 2 AM
📍 4696 30th St, San Diego

Raised by Wolves

The last place you’d expect to find one of San Diego’s most acclaimed cocktail bars is inside UTC Mall, but that’s exactly what makes Raised by Wolves so brilliant. This isn’t just hidden in plain sight – it’s hiding behind a vintage liquor store facade that doubles as both entrance and retail experience.

The theater starts immediately: browse bottles ranging from everyday pours to a $30,000 Eagle Rare, then wait for the hostess to guide you to the fireplace that rotates to reveal the actual bar. Inside, you’ll find a stunning Art Nouveau-inspired space with a circular granite bar topped by a stained glass gazebo.

Beverage director Anthony Schmidt has curated one of the region’s best Japanese whiskey collections and hand-selected single-barrel bourbons you won’t find elsewhere. Their cocktails push boundaries – like the Island Old Fashioned with coconut-infused banana liqueur – while respecting classic techniques.

The Bottom Line: Raised by Wolves proves exceptional whiskeys can thrive anywhere – even in a shopping mall.

📆 Open Mon – Thu, 4 PM – 11 PM | Fri – Sat, 3 PM – 1 AM | Sun, 3 PM – 11 PM
📍 4301 La Jolla Village Dr #2030, San Diego
