La Jolla Playhouse Serves Up Julia Child’s Origin Story in The Recipe
Before Julia Child became the culinary icon we all recognize, she was bouncing between cities, careers, and continents – from Pasadena to New York, Washington D.C. to Ceylon, and eventually landing at Paris’s legendary Cordon Bleu cooking school.
La Jolla Playhouse’s new production, The Recipe, digs into those early years, tracing her path from uncertainty to the discovery that would define her life.

A Story About Finding Your Thing
The Recipe isn’t a biographical highlight reel. It’s a play about the messy, funny, and sometimes frustrating journey of figuring out what we’re actually meant to do. Julia Child’s story hits differently when we see it as a series of false starts and pivots rather than a straight shot to success.
The production promises to balance humor with the kind of real-life chaos that makes her eventual triumph feel earned.
Playhouse Quality in La Jolla
La Jolla Playhouse has built a reputation for developing new works that go on to bigger stages, and The Recipe fits that model. Running in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theater, the production gets the intimate setting and attention to craft that the Playhouse is known for.
Whether we’re already fans of Julia Child or just appreciate a well-told origin story, this one seems designed to land with both crowds.
A Winter Run Worth Catching
The show opens in February and runs through late March, giving us plenty of chances to catch it during a time of year when La Jolla feels a little quieter and more accessible. With ticketing details available on the Playhouse’s site, it’s easy enough to plan ahead and lock in a date.
