Mission Trails Regional Park Expands With 53-Acre Land Donation

Mission Trails Regional Park is growing once again! Thanks to a major land donation from the Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) Foundation, the park has expanded by 53 acres, bringing the foundation’s total contribution to 108 acres.

This expansion strengthens the park’s role as one of San Diego’s largest open spaces, protecting local wildlife and preserving land for future generations.

A Step Forward in Conservation

With over 8,000 acres and 65 miles of trails, Mission Trails Regional Park is a beloved outdoor destination and a critical habitat for local species.

The latest land donation, made possible through funding from the San Diego River Conservancy (SDRC), aligns with the 2019 Master Plan Update and the Multiple Species Conservation Program (MSCP)—key initiatives designed to protect San Diego’s natural landscapes.

“The San Diego River Conservancy is proud to support these land acquisition efforts,” said SDRC Executive Officer Julia Richards. “This project enhances the San Diego River watershed, supports wildlife, and ensures the protection of open spaces for generations to come.”

Expanding Protected Open Spaces

The City of San Diego and MTRP Foundation continue to work on acquiring and preserving privately owned parcels within the park’s boundaries, particularly in the East Elliott Community Planning Area north of SR-52.

“The City of San Diego is grateful for this major land donation and ongoing conservation efforts,” said City Planning Director Heidi Vonblum. “With every expansion, we further protect Mission Trails Regional Park and ensure its beauty and biodiversity remain for years to come.”
