San Diego French Film Festival Returns With Julie Delpy as Patron

Film lovers and Francophiles have plenty to look forward to as the San Diego French Film Festival returns, celebrating storytelling from across the French-speaking world. This year’s edition shines a spotlight on women’s voices in francophone cinema, bringing powerful stories and acclaimed filmmakers to local screens.

A major highlight is internationally renowned filmmaker and actor Julie Delpy, serving as Patron of the sixth edition. She will present her latest film, Meet the Barbarians (Les Barbares), followed by a live Q&A, offering a rare opportunity to hear directly from the award-nominated artist.

A Celebration of Francophone Cinema and Culture

Presented by the Alliance Française San Diego, the festival features a diverse lineup of French-language films with English subtitles from countries including Canada, Cameroon, Tunisia, France, and the United States. The program reflects the cultural richness and global perspectives of the francophone world.

Screenings and special events will take place at THE LOT La Jolla and the Carlsbad City Library, creating welcoming spaces to experience international cinema and connect with filmmakers and fellow movie enthusiasts.

In addition to Julie Delpy, the festival will welcome an impressive lineup of creative voices. Featured guests include directors Erige Sehiri, Nathan Ambrosioni, and André Nerman, along with producer Marianne Maddalena, music director Victor le Masne, and actor Caroline Amiguet.

Program Highlights

The festival offers a thoughtfully curated schedule that explores themes of identity, love, resilience, and belonging:

  • Opening Night: Colors of Time (La Venue de l’avenir) by Cédric Klapisch launches the festival, followed by a festive gala reception.
  • In Conversation with Julie Delpy: Meet the Barbarians (Les Barbares), directed by and starring Delpy, delivers a sharp and satirical look at community and social change, followed by a live Q&A.
  • Stories of Love and Resilience: Screenings include The One I Loved (Moi qui t’aimais) by Diane Kurys and Promised Sky (Promis le ciel) by Erige Sehiri, with a director Q&A.
  • Young Audiences and Filmmaker Spotlight: The Sacred Cave (La Grotte sacrée) introduces younger viewers to African storytelling traditions, followed by Out of Love (Les Enfants vont bien) by Nathan Ambrosioni.
  • Closing Night: The festival concludes with Welcome to Iceland (Bienvenue en Islande) by André Nerman, along with a screening of Summer Beats (Ma Frère) by Lise Akoka and Romane Guéret.
