Lightscape Returns to San Diego Botanic Garden With New Installations

San Diego Botanic Garden‘s Lightscape is back for its fourth year, and if you’ve been before, you already know what makes this different from your average holiday light display.

For those who haven’t experienced it yet, we’re talking about a one-mile illuminated trail custom-designed for the Garden’s 37-acre property, featuring installations from international artists that turn the space into something that feels more like art than decoration.

What’s New This Year

The 2025 trail has been reinvigorated with brand-new installations alongside returning favorites. You’ll see illuminated California poppies, a field of fireflies, a laser garden, and other artistic pieces designed specifically for this location.

The tunnels of lights return, along with seasonal treats and drinks scattered throughout the trail.

It’s not just visual – sound plays a role too, creating an immersive environment that changes as you move through different sections.

Ari Novy, PhD, SDBG President and CEO, describes it as “a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages to celebrate and make memories together.” That framing is accurate – this works for families, couples, friend groups, or solo visitors who just want to walk through something beautiful.

The Scale of It

Lightscape has been dazzling cities worldwide for over a decade – London, Chicago, Melbourne, New York – with sold-out runs in each location. San Diego Botanic Garden is producing it in association with Sony Music and Culture Creative, so you’re getting production quality that matches those international shows.

The fact that it’s been growing bigger every year here suggests they’re doing something right.

This year adds two 21+ nights for adults who want the experience without kids running around. It’s also open on Christmas Eve, which gives you more flexibility for fitting it into your holiday schedule.

More Than Just Lights

What separates Lightscape from generic holiday displays is the intentionality behind it. These are artistic installations created by international artists, not just strings of lights shaped like reindeer.

You’re walking through a curated experience designed to guide you through what they call “a festive world of colorful wonder.” That might sound promotional, but when you’re actually there, the distinction becomes clear.

The one-mile format means you’re moving through the space at your own pace. You can linger where something catches your attention or keep moving if you want to see the whole thing. It takes about an hour to walk the full trail, depending on how much you stop.

Pricing and Access

Tickets start at $28 for adults and $18 for children (ages 2 and under are free), with prices varying by date. There are also Anytime Access tickets available at a flat rate if you want more flexibility, though those aren’t eligible for member discounts. SDBG Members get 10% off standard pricing throughout the season.

See you there!

If you’ve been putting off holiday activities that feel too generic, Lightscape offers something with actual substance – art, design, and production quality that justifies the ticket price.
